A Family Tradition
The Morrissey Classic began in 2003 in memory of Bob and Kay Morrissey. Members of the St. Ann and Gesu Parishes for over five decades, and avid sports fans, Bob and Kay were often seen at the various sporting events their 13 grandchildren participated in.
The brainchild of Jim Morrissey (son), the Morrissey Classic not only honors his parent’s legacy, it acts as an extension of Jim’s 40+ years of service to the Gesu, University School, and John Carroll University communities. Be it as coach or through philanthropy, Jim’s tireless efforts are one of the many reasons we honor him today by continuing on with this tradition. Jim retired as Chairman of the Morrissey Classic in 2022, the 20th year of the tournament. The Championship Trophy has been named in his honor: “The Jimbo.”
The tournament is currently coordinated by the extended Morrissey family: Chris Cooney, Michael, Neil, and Danny Morrissey (sons of Jim), and Dana and Michael Snelling.
