St. Jude Wins the Turnover Battle; Beats St. Raphael 48-33

In a battle of two great competitors, Saint Raphael and Saint Jude went toe to toe in a hard-fought battle. Saint Jude came out successful in grabbing the win, 48-33. All players involved obviously had lots of fun and enjoyed the competition. Throughout the matchup the defense was solid and defiant for both teams only allowing 81 points combined in the entire contest. For Saint Jude, they ran their lock down box-in-one zone defense which forced Saint Raphael to shoot outside shots during the entire contest. For Saint Raphael, they ran a very productive man-on-man defense getting opportunities to trap Saint Jude and force turnovers. Both teams struggled with fouls, but they overcame the adversity. 

Considering the value of each offensive possession, when each team was given the chance at easy buckets at the free throw line they had a high percentage of makes. Offensive rebounds were huge for both teams with each leading to key second shot opportunities. Daniela Shaughnessy and Alexandra Heidt helped Saint Jude take the win with each scoring over ten points. Daniela Shaughnessy, number fifty, had an outstanding game leading her team in scoring with 24 while also recording 14 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. On the other side Claire Barchanowicz and Ava Granzier played their tails off for Saint Raphael. Despite falling short in the contest Ava Granzier, number twenty-one, made constant valuable contributions for her team scoring 6 points and recording 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Overall, the entire game was well played, coached, and officiated.

 

Sts. Robert and William Hold On

Sts. Roberts and William managed to turn a close game into a blowout in their victory in over St. Mary’s of Chardon.  SRW outscored their opponents 30-20 in the second half to come away with the 65-48 win.  The game remained tight, with a strong defensive battle between the two teams raging on the court.  SRW went to half with a meager 7 point lead, with the score 35-28.  They would go on a scoring run in the third that would increase their lead to 52-38, and would sustain it into the fourth quarter and to the end of the game.

            For Sts. Roberts and William, four players had all-star performances to lead the team to victory.  #30 Zach Tizzano lead the team in rebounds with 10, and secured himself a double-double by scoring 10 points in the match.  #23 Noah Clark lead the team in scoring with 21 points, with #0 Clayton Cunningham close behind with 18 points and 8 rebounds.  Rounding out the team’s top four was #24 Jaylan McIntyre, who scored 14 points and was one rebound away from a double-double, grabbing 9 boards.  Overall, Sts. Robert and William out rebounded SMC 37-24, a major factor in their victory.

            For St. Mary’s of Chardon, #24 Ashton Gotham, #23 Adam Rababy, and #20 Marcus Rowan were the lead scoreres, with 16, 11, and 10 points respectively.  Rababy, Rowan, and #0 Ecan Galeazzo lead the teams in rebounds, with 5 a piece.

Holy Trinity Lances Gilmour

Holy Trinity took on Gilmour in an 8th Grade Boys contest. Holy
Trinity would secure the win 44-23 to close out the first day of the
Gesu Morrissey Classic.

The defenses for both teams would make it difficult for the offenses
to find their groove. However, Holy Trinity would score first, and
they would go into the second quarter with a 6-2 lead. Four quick
points would extend Holy Trinity’s lead to 10-4 early in the second.
They would continue with their offensive trend, though Gilmour would
start to string scoring plays together. Holy Trinity now led 21-13 at
halftime.

An all around effort in the third quarter gave Holy Trinity some extra
padding on their lead. 33-15 would be the score going into the final
stanza. The offensive display would continue in the fourth quarter.
Gilmour would get some more points on the board, but Holy Trinity
closed it out to get the 44-23 victory.

Zeb Eldridge led Holy Trinity in scoring with 10 points in the game.
Nathan Flaherty led the way for Gilmour with 11 points.

Gesu (Gannon) Wins! Beats Mater Dei

The Gesu (Gannon) Bulldogs managed to secure the win in their 5:00 matchup, outscoring the Knights of Mater Dei 30-15.  The Bulldogs came out hard in the first half, scoring 24 points to Mater Dei’s 9.  Point guard #23 Teagan Clark and Kaitlyn Klug let the scoring attack for the Bulldogs combining for 18 points.  In the paint the Bulldogs were dominant.  Ellie Olack and Megan Gannon combined for 9 rebounds, helping Gesu accumulate 19 rebounds to Mater Dei’s 11 in the first half.  For the Knights, #23 Caitlyn McCrone and #22 Rylee Hodge were the sole scorers, putting up 6 and 3 points respectively.  McCrone also lead the knights in rebounds with 3 in the half.

The third quarter brought an intense back and forth defensive battle, with Mater Dei managing to outscore the Bulldogs 6-4.  Entering the final quarter of play the score stood at 28-15 in favor of Gesu.  The fourth quarter once again brought a fierce defensive battle, with the Bulldogs successfully shutting out the Knights and extending their lead to 30 to 15.  The Bulldog’s Clark would end the day the leading scorer with 14 points, scoring two thirds of the team’s second half points.  Ellie Olack would grab another 9 rebounds for in the second half for a total of 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs.  For the Knights, Caitlyn McCrone and #3 Catherine Heckman were the top contributors.  McCrone ended the day as the leading point scorer and rebounder for Mater Dei, with 6 points and 8 rebounds earned.  Heckman was followed her up with 4 points and 7 rebounds in the game.

St. Raphael Bests Gesu (Salata)

St. Raphael would get the victory against Gesu in a close contest on
court one by the score of 28-22.

Both teams would trade baskets to start to the game. However, St.
Raphael would go on an 8-0 run afterwards, and they would have a 10-4
lead at the end of the first quarter. After both defenses kept each
other off the scoreboard for over 5 minutes, St. Raphael made it 12-4.
Then, Gesu would get their way back into the game as they went on a
7-0 run to close out the half. St. Raphael’s lead was now only by one
with the score at 12-11.

The teams would go back-and-forth in the third quarter. St. Raphael
scored baskets in the early minutes, but Gesu would score in
transition opportunities and use three-pointers. Gesu would take their
first lead of the game late in the quarter, and they had a one-point
lead going into the fourth with a 22-21 scoreline. In the fourth
quarter, St. Raphael would regain the lead early, and the would keep
it. Their defense would be stout to hold on for the victory 28-22

Rory Marcis lead St. Raphael in scoring in the game with seven points
scored. Margaret Lux and Francesca Carlo each had six points for Gesu.

Gesu Falls to ECS in a Battle of the 24's

The Emmanuel Christian Academy managed to stave off a Gesu (Cooper) comeback to win against the Bulldogs 65 to 46.  Emmanuel Christian dominated the Bulldogs in the first half, outscoring them 37-19 and accumulating 19 1sthalf rebounds, more than Gesu would the entire game.  The first half also included a spectacular one handed dunk from the Ram’s #24, Christopher Livingston.  Christopher would end the day with an incredible 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.

The deficit did not stop the Bulldogs from coming out strong against the Rams in the second half, bringing the score with 10 by the end of the third quarter.  This comeback was lead by Gesu’s #24 Kevin Bradley, whose 11 pts, 3 assists, and 4 steals kept Gesu in the game.  His leadership and passing ability as the team’s point man made their scoring run possible, and his defensive play, despite playing at a height deficit, gave new life into his team.  

However, this comeback would not come to fruition, as the Rams and Bulldogs traded baskets before strong defensive stands from Emmanuel Christian allowed them to increase their lead.  Height in the paint proved to be dagger for Gesu, as the Rams recovered three times as many boards as Gesu, rebounding 36 times over the course of the game to Gesu’s 12.  #23 Cordell Livingston, #24 Christopher Livingston, #11 Clinton Thomas were the team’s top rebounders, with 9, 7, and 7 boards respectively.

St. Mary's (Berea) Defeats St. Raphael in a Blow-Out

St. Mary’s Berea opened up the contest on 10-2 run, behind the hot
hand of Cade Veltcamp scoring the team’s first 10 points of the game.
St Mary’s Berea, continued the hot shooting scoring 19 points in the
first quarter.

The first half would end in strong fashion for St. Mary’s Berea
leading 44-8. Veltcamp led all scorers with 15 points, Daniel
Argalious led St. Raphael with four points at the break.

Argalious continued filling up the scoresheet scoring five points in
the third quarter. Reece Miller also got his rhythm going eclipsing 10
points.

St. Mary’s found multiple scoring options with Steven Bodamer, Caden
Veltcamp, Antonio Morini, Reece Miller, and Liam Hustak all scoring
nine points or more.

Veltcamp led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds.

St. Mary’s won the contest 73-24.

Warriors Take Down Holy Trinity

The Warriors of Sts. Robert & William got off to a hot start offensively, taking an early 6-1 lead halfway through the first quarter. Holy Trinity responded and the score after a hard-fought first quarter was 13-6, in favor of Saint Robert and William. 

The Warriors outscored Holy Trinity 10-4 in the second quarter, for a final score of 23-10 after one half of play. Pete McGreal led Holy Trinity in the opening half with four points and six rebounds. Noah Clark and Jaylan McIntrye led the way for Saint Robert and William, recording eight and six points respectively. 

The offensive success continuted for the Warriors as they started the second half of the contest on an 11-3 run. The score at the end of three was 40-16, still in favor of Saint Robert and William. 

After four quarters, the Warriors defeated Holy Trinity by a score of 49-31. Zach Tizzano led the Warriors with 7 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 assists. Noah Clark also contributed 20 points for the Warriors. On the other side, Pete McGreal led Holy Trinity with 9 points. Max Hartley and John Reddy also contributed 7 points each for Holy Trinity. 

St. Francis outlasts University School

Up and down, back and forth they went; both teams came out to play. The Prepper's of University School and the Cougars of St. Francis of Assisi duked it out on Court 2 to see who come out triumphant. Throughout an effortful and intense game, the Cougars left the court jubilant with their win, 28-21.

In the first quarter, the competition was almost even, with the score alternating between University School and St. Francis. In the second quarter, there was very similar play with University School ending the half on top with a score of 14-16.

St. Francis started the third quarter with vengeance, hoping to turn their one basket deficit into a lead. With their hustle and a sense of urgency, they did just that by ending the quarter 19-24. As they started the fourth quarter, both teams knew the battle wouldn't be easy. The Prepper's and the Cougars continued to go back and forth with scoring, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats. Despite the Prepper's feisty defense, the Cougars were able to move the ball successfully down the court in the last minutes of the game, securing the win. Mason Albano and Ethan Nowak led the team in points with 8 each. Rohan Sethi played an integral role in University's defense with 2 rebounds. 

St. Jude Takes a Bite out of Gesu (Salata)

An all-around outstanding effort from St. Jude allowed them to breeze past Gesu, with a score of 43-23.  The Raiders took an impressive lead early in the game, thanks to their stellar defense and precise shots.  Daniella Shaughnessy and Ella Raimondi were major assets on the court for St. Jude, as Raimondi had 13 points and Shaughnessy added 12.  The Bulldogs fought back, but were unable to gain an advantage over St. Jude throughout the competition.  Margaret Lux was the teams key contributor, having 6 points and 10 rebounds. 

Lady Crusaders Defeat Lady Bulldogs (Gannon)

The Bulldogs came out strong in the opening half against the Lady Crusaders. Olivia Rouser and Paris Gilmore were the sole scorers for the Lady Crusaders, each contributing two points. Teagan Clark led the Bulldogs in the opening half with ten points and three rebounds. Olivia Riechard and Caitlyn Klug each contributed four points to the Bulldog offense. Gesu held a 20-4 lead over the Lady Crusaders at the end of the first half. 

The Lady Crusaders came back fighting in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 14-8, but in the end it was Gesu who came out on top in the end, winning the contest by a final score of 28-18. Teagan Clark led Gesu with 12 points for the game. Caitlyn Klug added eight points of her own for the Bulldogs. Olivia Rouser ended the game with five points for the Lady Crusaders.

Emmanuel Christian Academy tops St. Mary’s Berea

A competitive battle between St. Mary’s Berea and Emmanuel Christian Academy put Emmanuel Christian Academy on top by a score of 43-36.  Emmanuel Christian Academy started off the game strong, winning the tip off and dominating the first quarter.  Christopher Livingston was the key contributor on ECA’s offense with 23 points and 10 rebounds.  A strong second quarter performance by St. Mary’s Berea allowed them to take the lead at half, but they were not able to secure it, as ECA came rushing back in the fourth quarter.  Caden Veltcamp led the way for St. Mary’s, as he had 14 points on the day, adding 7 rebounds. 

Bulldogs Come out Barking

The Gesu Bulldogs defeated the St. Raphael Raiders, 31-17, on Saturday afternoon in game one of the Morrisey Classic, hosted at Gilmore Academy. A tightly contested first quarter developed into a Bulldog lead at the half, 21-8. Gesu kept the lead throughout the third and fourth quarters, outscoring St. Raphael 10-9 in the final half. Finn McConville led the Bulldogs with eight points, and Max Mursean's five rebounds and three steals helped support the cause, as Gesu advanced to 1-0 on the weekend.

Vikings Defeat Lancers in Opener

After a hard fought battle in the first round, the Vikings of St. Mary Chardon came out victorious with a win over the Lancers of Gilmour Academy, 48 to 27. Ashton Gotham was the leading scorer for the Vikings, with 17 points and Joshua Bruce was the leading scorer for the Lancers with 16 points. Oliver Galeazzo, Evan Galeazzo, Adam Rababy, and Kyle Yates all played excellent defense for the Vikings with 2 rebounds each. Nathan Nootbaar was the top rebounder for the Lancers with 2 as well. Some of the other leading scorers for the Vikings were Evan Galeazzo and Adam Rababy who netted 6 and 5 points respectively. Although St. Mary came out on top, Gilmour kept the pressure on with their ferocious defense throughout the entire game. 

 

St. Vincent DePaul Comes Back to Win the Morrissey Classic

St. Vincent DePaul - 36 / Seton Catholic - 31

An offensive explosion by the St. Vincent de Paul Irish propelled the team from Akron to the 8th grade boys championship of the Morrissey Classic, defeating Seton Catholic of Hudson, 36-31.

The Irish outscored the Crusaders, 19-10, in the final period to complete the comeback victory. 

St. Vincent de Paul trailed 24-19 early in the final period but rallied to take a 26-24 lead when Alvin completed a three-point play with just under five minutes to play.

Seton answered from the free throw line with Sam making three of four, but a basket by Daryl and free throws by Alvin pushed the Irish lead up to 30-27.

Sam cut the St Vincent de Paul lead to 30-29 on a pair of free throws, but Alvin pushed the Irish advantage to 34-29 thanks to a bucket and two made free throws. The Irish were in command from there on out.

Alvin opened up the game with four consecutive points for St Vincent de Paul, but Seton took advantage of empty Irish possessions and countered with four points of its own. 

The Crusaders used five points in the final 90 seconds to take a 9-6 lead after one period. 

Sam, who scored the final points of the first period, opened the second with a great scoring drive to push the Crusaders lead to 11-6. The Irish struggled offensively in the second period, as it took 6 1/2 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Nausor broke the drought with a nice basket off a feed from Daryl. Seton looked in command in the closing minute, but a steal and breakaway lay-up by Keion cut the Crusaders lead to 14-10 at the intermission.

St. Vincent de Paul picked up its defensive intensity in period number three, and defense led to offense with baskets from Martavean and Kevin to tie the game a 14-14

Seton stopped the run when Ben recovered from a steal attempt and buried a short jumper for a 16-14 edge. Aidan then came up with a transition basket to push the Crusaders lead to 18-14. It was part of a 7-0 that pushed Seton's lead to a game-high seven point points at 21-14. But three free throws down in the final ten seconds by the Irish cut the lead to 21-17. 

Alvin led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Irish

Ben was the top scorer for Seton with 13 points.

Sts. Joseph and John's Rolls Over Gesu

Sts. Joseph & John - 56 / Gesu - 39

Hot shooting was the difference in Saints Joseph and John's lopsided 56-39 victory.
Leading the way for the Vikings was number 13, Jack with 16 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc.

Not only was the sharp shooting effective, but speed and height were clearly proved too much for Gesu as they struggled for rebounds and effective shots.
 

For Gesu, Christopher had a great game accounting for 15 points and three rebounds.

St. Christine Wins a Thriller

St. Christine - 54 / St. Sebastian - 53

St. Sebastian came out surging out of the gates. They outscored St. Christine's squad by 8 in the first and used their early lead as foundation to keep this advantage for the first 3 periods. Then, after Sebastian's high scoring big man fouled out at the beginning of the fourth and their three point attempts were not dropping at the same rate as the first half, Christine was able to swallow up the defensive glass and pounded the paint on fast breaks. St. Christine's pouring in of buckets from close range allowed them to make a fantastic run and close the books on a thrilling one point victory.

St. Barnabas Starts Hot; Defeats Notre Dame

St. Barnabas - 57 / Notre Dame - 31

St Barnabas ran away Notre Dame from the start but Notre Dame finished with a strong 4th quarter. St Barnabas won by a score of 57-31 led by scorers Geo Loya (17), Ronnie Schultz (15), and Thomas Crowe (13). Loya and Shultz also added 11 rebounds each to aid their team. Notre Dame seemed to be undone by the fast break offense of St Barnabas. The leading scorer and rebounder for Notre Dame was Justin Lazuka with 8 and 6 respectively.

St. Raphael is the 2016 Morrissey Classic Champion

St Raphael 34, St. Christine 26 

The strong defensive presence from St. Raphael set the tone in the eighth girls championship game victory. 

St. Raphael set the tone early on the defensive side of the ball. On the night, the team had XX steals in the game and limited St. Christine to XX in the first half. St. Raphael was led on offensive by Kaylie, who chipped in an impressive nine points and six rebounds and Clare had seven points and eight rebounds. Supplying important work on the boards was Clare who led the team with her eight rebounds. St. Raphael led through all four quarters, including a 19-13 score line at the half. 

St. Christine made an impressive run late in the game, but the come back effort came up just short. With under two minutes to play in regulation, St. Christine trailed by just seven points. Supporting the offensive efforts for the team was Anisah who led the team with 17 points and 20 rebound on the day. Adding onto the offensive performance for St. Christine was Samantha who manufactured three points in the contest. 

St. Raphael would hold off a late come-from-behind effort from St. Christine to finalize the 34-26 final score. With the victory, St. Raphael is crowned the eighth grade girls tournament champions.
