Hawks Eke Out a Victory over a Tough Holy Trinity

Hawkens Hawks beat Holy Trinity in both teams first game of the Morrissey Classic with a final score of 43-41.

Both teams came out hot in the first minutes of the first quarter with back and forth points from Holy Trinity and the Hawkens Hawks. However, Holy Trinity started to pull away with 4 minutes left, until number 22 Tommy Grajzl on the Hawks tallied a 3, resulting in the score of 7-9 going into the second quarter.

During the second quarter both teams were working hard to gain offensive control of the ball. However, the Hawks pulled away in points going into the third quarter making the score 24-16.

Third quarter started off heavy with a 3 pointer from  31, Maddux Payne on Holy Trinity in the first minute of play. Both teams played with a lot of passion throughout, but the Hawks remained on top with a score of 34-28 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter Holy Trinity tied up the game with a 3 pointer from number 1 Robbie Duray with 2 minutes left making the score 39-39 in the fourth quarter. With back and forth points from both of the teams, and seconds left in the game the Hawks took the lead securing a win with a layup from number 22 Tommy Grajzl.

Hawkens Hawks would go to secure a win with a final score of 43-41.

St. Mark Wallops Gesu 46-10

The first half was fast from the get go, with both teams trading blows back and forth. St. Mark ended the first quarter with a 14-2 lead. 

Gesu would battle back in the second quarter though, as the Bulldogs would cut the deficit to 10 halfway through the quarter. 

St. Mark would gain back some momentum late in the quarter, and would give themselves a 17 point lead at halftime. 

For the Lions, Tom Schmidt led the way with 10 points at the end of the first half. James Boylan ended the half with 3 points and 4 rebounds, and Evan Lentz ended the half with 2 points and 5 rebounds. 

For Gesu, Jerome Bohanon ended the half with 4 points, and Patrick Murphy finished the half with 6 rebounds. 

To start the third quarter, Lentz would get the Lions off to a quick start with an easy layup in transition. 

Later on in the quarter, the Lions would continue to keep the pressure on defensively with a running clock. Bob LoPresti found himself on the charity stripe and split his free throws. Late in the third LoPresti had 5 points and 4 rebounds. 

At the end of the third quarter, St. Mark was ahead 34-9. 

In the fourth quarter, KiShawn Brown was racking up buckets, as he increased his total to 7 points and 9 rebounds on the day. 

The game ended with St. Mark’s taking home a 46-10 win. 

For the Lions, Tom Schmidt  and Rocco Walton ended the game with 10 points each.

For Gesu, Patrick Murphy ended the game with 6 rebounds, and Jerome Bohanon ended the game with 4 points. 

Preppers Take Down the Knights 40-32

University School Preppers beat the St Paschal Baylon Knights in both teams first game of the Morrissey Classic with a final score of 40-32.

The first quarter was back and forth for the University School Preppers and the St Paschal Baylon Knights, with a score of 4-4 at the end of the first.

In the second quarter the Preppers went in with force and picked up the energy, where the Knights worked hard to answer back. Connor Klung, 9 from the Preppers was both prominent on defense and offense tallying 9 points. With 42 seconds left Preppers number 10, Gavin Wright secured the lead going into the 3rd quarter with a 3 pointer, making the score 21-15 at the end of the second.

In the third quarter the Knights came out hot adding 9 points making the score 29-24 and closing the gap going into the fourth quarter. Number 45 Luke Spinos on the knights was a rebound machine in the fourth quarter keeping the nights in the neck and neck game. However, number 35 Jamal Little on the Preppers answered back with a 3 pointer with 1 minute and 30 seconds left in the fourth making the Preppers lead in the game by 6.

University School Preppers would go to hang onto the lead and win with a final score of 40-32.

Hawken takes down LCA 43-11 (7th Grade)

LCA hopped out to a quick lead early on with a quick bucket from Conner Theofilos off of an inbound. 

The next six minutes of basketball were very sloppy, with both teams turning the ball over multiple times, and both teams putting up a great defensive effort. LCA was forced to take a timeout, and coming out of that timeout, Hawken was able to get the ball back and capitalize on a layup by Brennen Twarkdous. 

Twarkdous would continue to get open shots underneath, as on the next possession he hit another open layup. 
Hawken would continue to put the pressure on in the first quarter, with KJ St. Clair converting an and-one opportunity, and Martin Jackson, along with Twarkdous getting open layups in transition. 

At the end of the first quarter, Hawken was ahead 11-2. 

Hawken would keep the pressure on in the second quarter, as Will Gardener and Malcolm Claytor would score some easy buckets underneath to begin the quarter. 

LCA was able to respond with a layup from Andrew Blesi. 

Hawken’s quick and sneaky attack would keep them on top, however, as Twarkdous and St. Clair would each get transition points off of turnovers. 

At halftime, Hawken led 24-4. 

Coming out of half, Malcolm Claytor started things out with a quick mid range jumper and a transition layup. These were both followed by a three by Lincoln Thomas. 

LCA would get their first points of the half off a three by Conner Theofilos. 

Hawken would continue to capitalize off of a great defensive effort, and at the end of three, the score was 43-7. 

The rout would continue in the fourth quarter, as Hawken would have a running clock in their favor, and run away with the game. The Hawks took down the Saints 48-11.

Gesu Bests University School in Opening Game of the 2023 Morrissey Classic (7th Grade)

Gesu beat the University School Preppers in both teams first game of the Morrissey Classic with a final score of 30-20

Defense prevailed through the first quarter with Gesu taking the lead 8-2.

The second quarter saw a Luke Meyers three ball answered by the Bulldogs Jack Favet. Another Preppers three point shot would keep University School in a one possession game to the half. With a halftime score of 16-13 in favor of Gesu.

In the second half Gesu was working hard to extend their lead but the Preppers were keeping themselves in the game with good ball movement. Gesu eventually pulled away and took a 12 point lead heading into quarter four.

Gesu would go to hang onto the lead and win with a final score of 30-20.

Holy Trinity Rides Strong Second Half to defeat Sts. Robert and William to win Back-to-Back Morrissey Classic Championships

After trailing heading into the second half, the Holy Trinity Eagles fought back to win the 8th grade championship over St Robert and Williams, 47-33

Both teams started off the contest slow, with a solid defensive performance from both teams. No team was able to pull ahead and gain momentum and the quarter ended 9-8 in favor of St Robert and Williams.

The back-and-forth match leaked into the second quarter, with the Warriors taking a small lead at the end of the quarter, 19-15. Jaevon Hairston sparked St. Robert and Williams with 10 points, 5 rebounds at half. While the Warriors had dominate play from Hairston, Holy Trinity had a group effort, with everyone finding points in the first half.

But the tides quickly changed in the second half, and the Eagles came out roaring with energy on offense that the Warriors could not contain. They took the lead in the third quarter, and did not look back. Holy Trinity would seal the deal and take home the championship.

Brendan Ansberry totaled 11 points for the Eagles, while Lucas Adkins tallied 8 points and Anthony Anghilante posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

St. Francis Cruises to Victory in the 7th Grade Boys Championship over Lake Catholic Academy

The Lions of St. Francis ends their tournament run with a big offensive win in the 7th grade championship over Lakewood Catholic Academy, 46-23.

St. Francis jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, thanks to Earl Jackson and Antoine Wooten accounting for half of the points. Lakewood Catholic Academy was able to contain the St. Francis to a ten point lead, 12-2 to end the first quarter.

The offensive explosion began in the second quarter for the Lions. St. Francis ran away with a huge lead heading into the second half, 31-7.

The second half had a change of pace, with the Saints mounting a close comeback. However, their 16 points in the second half was not enough to take the lead.

St. Francis’ scoring effort was led by Jerome Bohanon, who finished the game with 12 points, and Antoine Wooten, who ended with 9 points. Emon Everett also dominated down low, totaling 8 rebounds.

Slemc and Rook outscore Gesu as St. Paschal wins 39-19

St Paschal started the game out strong as they were leading Gesu at half.

Gesu attempted to slow them down with a zone but it didn’t work.

Jason Rook ended the half leading St. Paschal with 4 points. Trip Doyle was big for Gesu as he finished the half with 4 of their 6 points.

Paschal came out strong in the second half, forcing turnovers and getting easy opportunities on offense. Pressure on defense proved to be big for St. Paschal throughout this game.

St. Paschal controlled this game from start to finish. Owen Slemc ended up leading Pascal in scoring with 13 points. They also got contributions from Jason Rook (12 points) and Brayden Titas (6 points 5 rebounds 5 assists).

Big Second Quarter for St. Raphael as They Knock Off Our Lady of the Lake

Both teams started out relatively slow, but things began to pick up after Devontey Perkins came in with the first basket of the game. 

Keeping with this lead throughout the second quarter, Devontey Perkins continued to add to the score with a lay up and showed great initiative with seven rebounds. Guy Dominick brought the team’s focus back together after a layup of his own. 

Things started to pick up as St. Raphael began to apply the pressure and stack up their points. Game score came in at 7:6.

Game came to a complete turn around as St. Raphael takes the lead. Incredible as the team dominated the court, with Rowan Kelly after he scored seven points and Owen McGurer added with 6, score came in at 7 to 21. 

During the third quarter, Our Lady of the Lake was hard at work as they attempted to take back their lead, with Henry Gonakis with a layup.  Despite their efforts, St. Raphael still held fast to their lead at 29 to 16 points.

Rounding out the final quarter of the game, Guy Dominick diligently put in the effort to bring up the game score to 20 to 29, but St. Raphael competitively followed up with a 3 which only added to their own lead. Final score comes in at 23 to 39, with St. Raphael taking home the win. 

Back and Forth Battle Won By St. Pascal; Defeat Sts. Robert and William (7th Grade)

St. Paschal Baylon takes on Sts. Robert and William in a 7th-grade matchup to round out their time in the Morrissey Classic.

Both teams fought neck-and-neck in the first quarter. 

The close matchup continued into the second quarter with only three points separating the teams with a score of 21-18. St. Paschal Baylon held the narrow lead. Jack Quinn led the Knight’s scoring in the first half with six points.

The Knights continued to play a strong offense in the third quarter, but the Warriors fought back to tie the game at 26 apiece.

St. Paschal Baylon’s offense continued to push them ahead, taking a 39-34 win over the Sts. Robert and William Warriors.

The top scorers for the Warriors were Ashton Gray (11) and Carter Muscenti (10) Scoring leaders for the Knights were Lorenzo Salvatore (13) and Joey Puletti (10).

St. Gabriel Routes St. Francis of Assisi 39-20

The first half of the game was up and down with both teams looking for opportunities in transition as they struggled to knock down open looks in the half court.

Blake Dumermuth got going early for St Gabriel as he ended the half with 7 points. He also took pride and brought energy to the defensive end as well.

St Francis of Assisi came out in a zone to attempt to slow them down but it simply wasn’t enough to contain St Gabriel as they still were able to get good looks around the rim.

St Francis of Assisi tried to rally in the fourth but in the end it just wasn’t enough to close out the win today as they lose to St. Gabriel, 39-20.

Holy Trinity Ends Their Time in the Morrissey Classic with a Win Over Gesu (7th Grade)

In the opening game of the second day of the Morrissey Classic, Holy Trinity and Gesu were eager to claim a win in the tournament.

Both teams came out aggressive, with a score of 14-9 at the end of the first quarter with Gesu leading. Pete King and Connor Klug dominated the scoring for Gesu with six points and five points, respectively.

A beautiful three by Gavin Kuchta in the second quarter helped to cut into Gesu’s lead, but the Bulldogs held onto a narrow lead with a score of 16-14 at the half.

Kuchta and Gesu’s Matthew Vitale traded three-pointers in the third quarter as both teams continued to battle. Holy Trinity’s aggressive playing paid off as the game began to tilt in their favor, taking a 30-23 lead going into the final quarter.

Holy Trinity maintained their lead in the fourth quarter, but Gesu did not go down without a fight. Holy Trinity won with a final score of 37-31.

Scoring leaders for Gesu were Connor Klug (13 points) and Pete King (10 points). Holy Trinity’s offense was led by Owen Fay (14 points), Gavin Kuchta (10 points), and Cristian Perez (9 points).

Both teams are excited to start the regular season.

St. Paschal’s Big 2nd Quarter Too Much For Holy Trinity (7th Grade)

The score was kept tight throughout the first quarter, as St. Paschal Baylon led 10-8 in the first quarter of Holy Trinity. Joey Puletti had 6 of their points and 2 rebounds as well. Luke Spinos added with 4 rebounds.

St. Paschal began to pull away in the second quarter when they scored 15 points and held Holy Trinity to just 2. Contributing to the scoring efforts along with Puletti was Max Zalik and Lorenzo Salvatore with 6 apiece.

Coming out of halftime with a 25-10 score, the game continued to pick up. Holy Trinity began to close the gap with Robbie Duray (7), Owen Fay (6), and Connor Zap (7) leading the way in points.

Despite the efforts, St. Paschal's Puletti finished with 15 points and Zalik grabbed a total of 8 rebounds to pull off the win, with a final score of 41-31.

20 Points from Carter Muscenti to Hot for Gesu. Sts. Robert and William win 48-44 (7th Grade)

Gesu and St. Roberts and Williams come out fast and electric on the defensive side in the first quarter.

The first quarter was a defensive slugfest with only a total of 19 points scored between both teams.

Carter Muscenti leads St. Robert and Williams with 4 points and 4 rebounds while Matthew Vitale leads Gesu with 3 points and 2 rebounds.

The second quarter started off hot with a Patrick McLaughlin 3 pointer for Gesu. After that, it was all back and forth between both offenses.

Rowan Sessor was on fire making a huge 3 pointer with 10 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. St. Robert and Williams is up at halftime 28-25.

St. Robert and Williams was on fire in the third quarter increasing their lead to 8 points which is a game high. Carter Muscenti seemed unstoppable on the boards recording 4 rebounds.

Although Gesu’s offense has stalled, Connor Klug helped his team defensively with 2 rebounds and 2 steals. St. Robert and Williams leads 38-31.

Gesu fought hard to come back into this game, with leading scorer Connor Klug leading the way. Carter Muscenti had a monsterous game with 20 points and 14 rebounds, leading all players.

The final score of the game was 48-44 with St. Robert and Willams taking home the victory.

Holy Trinity Fights off Gesu’s Second Half Surge

Holy Trinity came off strong in the first half. Kevin Lally (4), Anthony Anghilante (6), Will Briggs (6), Brendan Ansberry (8), and Lucas Adkins (7) significantly contributed to the scoring efforts of the team in the first half. Anghilante added to his scoring success with 8 boards. Going into the third quarter, the score was 31-12, Holy Trinity.

Gesu struggled offensively in the first half, just putting up 12 points. The high scorer was Teagan Fishel, with 6 points and 6 boards to go with that. Jackson Campbell also put up some numbers defensively with 4 rebounds.

Gesu's offense and defense quickly picked up, scoring 23 points in the second half and holding Holy Trinity to 9. The Bulldogs really closed the gap and put up a fight, falling just short with a score of 35-40.

Gesu's Fishel especially stood out with a double-double. Grabbing 10 boards to add to his 16 points, Fishel led the comeback for the Bulldogs. Josh Young put up a big game with 8 points and 7 rebounds for Gesu as well.

In the end, it was Holy Trinity that came out victorious, led by Anghilante's 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Jack Hobson’s 22 Points Too Much for St. Paschal as Sts. Robert and William Win 58-43

Sts. Robert and William took on St. Paschal in both teams second game of the day.

The first half was controlled by the Warriors. Jahi Hobson recorded 12 in the first half. Jason Rook had six points for St. Paschal.

The warriors pushed ahead in the second half going up 40-27 in the fourth quarter.

Brayden Titas controlled the offense well for St. Pascal.

Smooth moves from Jaevon Hairston created offensive opportunities all game for the Warriors. He helped his team maintain their lead in the second half.

Jasen Rook lead the scoring for St. Paschal with 14. As for the Warriors it was Jahi Hobson with 22.

Sts Robert and William took the win over St. Paschal 58-43.

Our Lady of the Lake Ekes by St. Francis of Assisi

Our Lady of the Lake takes on St. Francis of Assisi in a 7th Grade match-up.

It was a slow start to the game, with the Cougars up after a first quarter score of just 11-4. Bruno Cook and Joe Locker had 9 of the Cougars's 11 points. The Falcons knew that they had to give themselves better chances to get the ball in the hoop going forward.

The ball finally got rolling in the second quarter, as the Falcons took the lead with a halftime score of 20-13. Guy Dominick and Devontey Perkins put up a fight for their Falcons, especially. Dominick had 10 total points, and 6 rebounds by halftime, and Perkins added 8 boards and 6 points.

The game continued to move quickly in the second half, as the score remained close. Notable players were Bruno Cook (13) and Joe Locker (11), who led the offense at St. Francis of Assisi.

However, Our Lady of the Lake played strong defense in the fourth quarter, which contributed to their win. Guy Dominick (16) and Devontey Perkins (11) led OLL offensively with quick ball movements and consistent passes to the post.

The final score was 39-35, and Our Lady of the Lake took home the victory.

LCA Outlasts Sts. Robert and William in a Low Scoring, Tight Contest

This game started out as a defensive battle as the half time score of 6-10 can attest to that.

St Roberts and Williams came out in the second half with physicality manning the glass taking advantage of 2nd chance opportunities.

LCA came out with pressure and intensity as it helped them rally at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Ultimately, it helped their offense get going as they started to hit shots, helping them rally back and win the game today. LCA wins 24-22 over Sts. Robert and William.

Defense Seals the Deal for St. Raphael as they Best St. Gabriel 37-24 (7th Grade)

St. Raphael and St. Gabriel made for a great matchup at 4:00. Both teams' explosive offense allowed the Raiders to lead 15-12. Connor Brugh led the way for the Grizzlies with six points and a rebound in the first quarter.

The second quarter was all about defense as the half closed up 26-16 in favor of the Raiders. Owen McGurer recorded 8 points and an assist in the first half for St. Raphael.

Coming out of halftime the Raiders exploded out to a 31-16 lead. At the end of the third quarter.

Owen McGruer finished with the most points for St. Raphael.

The Raiders offense was able to push through the Grizzlies defensive efforts and finish the game with the win 37-24.

St. Francis Dominates Second Half; Hold off Tough Holy Trinity For 60-46 Victory (7th Grade)

St. Francis started the game hot with an 8-0 run before a Holy Trinity timeout. Holy Trinity finished out the first quarter strong behind five points from Cristian Perez. St. Francis was led by Emon Everett who had 11 points in the first quarter.

At the half St. Francis held onto a slim lead up 27-26. Emon Everett played well in the paint with 14 rebounds and an equal amount of points.

Holy Trinity's zone defense forced long possessions by the Lions who eventually were able to capitalize. Consecutive defensive stops from St. Francis put them ahead of the Eagles, 39-27 in the middle of the third quarter.

Michael Johnson had himself a quarter with a strong finish and the and-one nearing the end of the third quarter. The Lions still held the lead 46-32 heading into the fourth.

The Lions were able to hold their lead and finish with a 60-46 win over Holy trinity
